The honeymoon is over for Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries as the newlyweds are reportedly breaking up.
After just 72 days as man and wife, E! News reports that Kim has filed for divorce. There’s no word on what exactly went wrong, as Kim only listed irreconcilable differences as the reason for the split.
"After careful consideration, I have decided to end my marriage," Kim said in a statement. "I hope everyone understands this was not an easy decision."
Kris has yet to release a formal statement on the break up, but TMZ.com reports that he’s told his friends in the NBA that he was "blindsided" by the divorce filing. Apparently, he found out about her decision to leave like the rest of the world did: online.
Kim and Kris wed on August 20 in an elegant ceremony, which was captured by E! cameras. They got engaged in May after just six months of dating. From beginning to end, the relationship lasted less than a year.
Documents Kim filed in Los Angeles Superior Court listed today as the official date of their separation. The marriage only lasted about 10 weeks, much to Kim’s disappointment. "I had hoped this marriage was forever," she said in a statement," but sometimes things don’t work out as planned. We remain friends and wish each other the best."
Though their relationship is over, the couple had already taped a few episodes for season 2 of "Kourtney and Kim Take New York," which debuts on November 27. The season will likely give viewers a front-row seat of the breakdown of the marriage, as some of Kris and Kim’s arguments, like where they will settle down, were captured for TV.
Kim and Kris had a prenuptial agreement, stipulating that all "miscellaneous jewelry and other personal effects" to include "earrings and accumulations" obtained during the relationship be designated as separate property. It’s not clear if her 20.5-carat engagement ring is covered by that part of the contract.
Kris may have to foot his own legal bills, too, as Kim stated that she would prefer for each of them to cover their own court costs.
This news comes just hours after reports surfaced that the marriage was actually planned by E!. According to NecoleBitchie.com, the network wanted to hook Kim up with a high-profile boo last year and Kris wasn’t their first choice.
Supposedly, the network had approached Danilo Gallinari of the New York Knicks and although he was interested in meeting Kim, he didn’t want to do it on camera. Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter were also out of the running as both New York Yankees were in relationships at the time. There weren’t many prospects for Kim in the NFL, either.
If E! wanted to get Kim coupled up, the network’s hopes were riding on Kris, who was reportedly their last resort.
Neither Kim nor Kris have said anything about those allegations at this time.
