Heavy D got one last checkup just hours before he suddenly passed away this week.
The New York Daily News reports that the rapper was aware that his health was failing, so he went in a for a checkup.
“He had gone to the doctor the day before,” a rep for the Los Angeles County Coroner’s office told the Daily News. “He had what appeared to be like flu-like symptoms.”
Officials have completed an autopsy on Hev, but they’re declining to state what may have killed him until they’ve done a toxicology test. Results for that could take six weeks to return. The rapper, who weighed 344 pounds when he died, was taking some prescriptions.
“He was taking medication, so we want to see what the levels were,” the rep said. Investigators believe that the rapper’s passing was due to a health problem. Lt. Mark Rosen of the Beverly Hills Police Department said, “There doesn’t appear to be any foul play. We believe it was medically related.”
Heavy D’s cousin, Ruddy Phillips, told The Daily News that the rapper had been complaining of feeling a bit under the weather. “He said he had a touch of pneumonia, maybe from traveling. He just got back from England," Ruddy said.
Heavy D fans can get one last glimpse of him in Tower Heist, where he has a cameo as a security guard. He’s survived by his mother, his father, and his 13-year-old daughter with whom he was very close.
“He was a really great dad," said Ruddy. "Everybody is wondering how she’s going to take it now that he’s gone. She loves her dad so much.”
