Are plastics harmful to your baby?

As if expecting mothers don’t have enough to worry about, researchers now believe certain chemicals present in soft plastics can affect the development of boys.

Some believe that phthalates, found in shower curtains, raincoats and other objects, can be linked to low sperm count and testosterone in men.

“There’s just too much incremental data that has built up to be ignored,” pediatric urologist Dr. Howard Snyder told “60 Minutes.”

However, there are those that continue to believe phthalates are safe.

“They are in fact safe for their intended use,” said Cal Dooley, President of the American Chemistry Council.

Watch the report on phthalates below, and get Jamie Foster Brown’s take on the subject in the January 2012 issue.
