Red Tails made an impressive showing for its opening weekend, but it didn’t quite make it to #1.
Black people all over the United States flooded theaters this weekend to see Red Tails, starring Cuba Gooding Jr. and Terrence Howard. Some theaters even made an event of the debut by having actual members of the Tuskegee Airmen at different showings to sign autographs.
Despite the huge push in the Black community to get people to the movies for the premiere, the film only made it to #2. According to stats from BoxOfficeMojo.com, Red Tails played on 2,512 screens across the country and raked in $19.1 opening weekend.
Underworld Awakening, which took #1 at the box office, had a slight advantage upon release: it played on 3,078 screens, earning $25.4 million.
