Grammy winner Mary J. Blige admitted that being omitted from this year’s Oscar field was a bit of a blow.
“It hit hard. It was kinda rough. I must say," Mary told Andy Cohen on “Watch What Happens Live!”
Mary watched The Help twice before writing the song “Living Proof” as part of the film’s soundtrack. However, there are only two songs nominated in the category for Best Original Song this year. Normally, there are five.
"I’m confused. I don’t know what to say except for I just gotta keep doing what I do and look at this as a battery in my back to keep striving and be thankful for the lesson, count it as a blessing," said Mary, who decided to look on the bright side.
"I think the lesson is to just keep going. Don’t let things make you spiral down,” she said. “The positive side is that there’s obviously something better” for me.
Maybe that better thing is a movie about Mary’s life. When asked which actress she would select to play her in a biopic, Mary responded that the person to play that role isn’t on the scene yet.
"She’s nowhere yet. She’s probably growing up somewhere in her neighborhood, trying to figure out life, and she’ll be cast. That’ll be the person I’ll cast. Not anyone in the music business. It would have to be pure," she said.
So, fans may have to wait another decade or two before Mary’s life makes it to the big screen.
Mary also talked to Andy about the Lil’ Kim vs. Nicki Minaj beef. Being fond of both of them, Mary was very diplomatic with her answer.
“I think that they’re both really super-talented. Kim is a really good friend of mine and I got to know Nicki, and I think she’s a beautiful person as well. So, I’m neutral on that one," she said.
