If Grammy Award viewers were left bewildered by Nicki Minaj’s “satanic” performance, mimicking an exorcism, she said that’s because you’re not a true fan.
“My fan base, the Roman Empire and the Barbz, they understand every single thing I do,” Nicki told Ryan Seacrest in a recent radio interview.
Many were left perplexed Sunday night when Nicki walked the red carpet in a huge red robe, reminiscent of Little Red Riding Hood’s, and their confusion only increased after her performance, which included a short film and ended with her levitating.
Nicki explained that the character in the performance was one of her many alter egos.
“His name is Roman. Basically, the religious figure is there because he was called by Roman’s mom to rehabilitate him. That’s pretty much it,” she said, before clarifying how she and Roman are alike.
“I had this vision for Roman. I had this vision for him to be sort of exorcised. People around him tell him he’s not good enough ‘cause he’s not normal, and he’s not blending in with the average Joe. People around him are afraid because they’ve never seen anything like him. Not only is he amazing, sure of himself and confident, but he’s never going to be exorcised. Even when they throw the holy water on him, he rises above,” she said.
While the performance resulted in mixed reactions by those who watched, Nicki said she was more than pleased with it all, and fans may have Madonna to thank.
“Meeting Madonna changed my life. Working with Madonna changed my life. Rehearsing with Madonna for two weeks changed my life,” she said in reference to her Super Bowl halftime show with the “Material Girl.”
“This was the first performance I’m proud of in my entire career,” she said. "The Madonna situation inspired me to give it my all.”
Although Nicki admitted that her Grammy performance was the most comfortable she’s ever been on stage, that’s not to suggest that’s all fans will be seeing from now on.
“That was a moment, and that in no way, shape or form is going to be a trend into a never-ending saga. Roman is one facet of my brand. The next performance will not be that “Roman Holiday” performance.
