Royce Reed returns to the theater

Royce Reed is putting her college degree to good use and hitting the stage on "Basketball Wives." Get a sneak peek at the season 4 premiere!

In the days leading up to the new season of "Basketball Wives," Royce has taken some time to grace the stage in the off-Broadway play, Platanos Y Collard Greens. While she auditioned like every other actor up for a part, she said she landed the role because she blew casting directors away.

"I went in and I think they didn’t think I was going to actually be good based off of their reaction," Royce told S2S with a laugh. "They were pleasantly surprised and offered me the part."

She expected that her performance would be met with at least some skepticism due to her long-standing role on "Basketball Wives." With a reality show on her entertainment résumé, she’s got to work a little harder to prove that her theatrical talents are solid and there’s more to her than the weekly drama that plays out on TV.

"They had no idea that I was a theater major…that I went to FAMU [Florida A&M University]," Royce explained. "I think they assumed that I was just another reality star that decided one day that she wanted to be an actress. They had no idea that I’ve been doing this since I was 10 years old and that it’s something I take very seriously."

Royce let it slip that she was definitely multi-tasking during her audition, as VH1 cameras were rolling at the time. "You might see their reaction on the show," she said.

"It definitely caught me off-guard because [the casting directors] were very blunt about it, but I’m happy that I changed their minds."

In her estimation, viewers will likely get to see what went on behind the scenes of the play. "Some of the stuff was filmed, whether or not it makes it to air I don’t know," Royce said. "I talk about the play a lot, so I don’t think they can get around showing that."

If you want to see her for yourself, she’ll be playing Melody in Platanos Y Collard Greens on February 17 and 18. Click here for ticket information.

Royce fully expects that her friends and castmates will show up to see her on stage. "I know Tami [Roman] is coming and Suzie [Ketcham] and Kesha [Nichols]," Royce said, listing her "BBW" co-stars. "I don’t know about anybody else, but if anybody else comes, thanks for coming to support me."

Two faces that Royce definitely doesn’t expect to see in the audience are Shaunie O’Neal and Evelyn Lozada.

"I don’t film with Shaunie or Evelyn—and it’s not me; I don’t deny filming with anybody," Royce revealed to S2S. "They decided not to shoot with me this time. That’s their choice, but it’s definitely not me. I know what I signed up for."

Not shooting with Shaunie and Evelyn means that Royce won’t be present for the more raucous moments this season, and that’s just fine with her.

"It’s been more relaxing for me because I’ve just been able to do Royce," she admitted. "I think that just being able to hear about everything that goes on and trying to be the voice of reason is a better fit for me."
