In what has quickly become one of the nation’s most controversial and polarizing shooting in recent history, the parents of Trayvon Martin, the 17-year-old who was fatally wounded on February 26, in his gated community while walking home from a convenience store, are now accusing police of leaking information in an effort to destroy his reputation.
"Even in death, they are still disrespecting my son," said Tracy Martin, Trayvon’s father.
On Monday, information started to spread about Trayvon’s recent expulsion from school and the circumstances that led to that. Reportedly, in the days leading up to his death, Trayvon was caught o school property with marijuana in his backpack. Trayvon’s mother, Sybrina Fulton claims that police leaked that information on purpose in an attempt to portray her son in an unflattering light.
“The only comment that I have right now is that they killed my son and now they’re trying to kill his reputation,” said Sybrina, with Martin family attorney Benjamin Crump and Reverend Al Sharpton by her side.
Benjamin then added, “If he and his friends experimented with marijuana, that is completely irrelevant.” Before pointedly questioning why the focus had been diverted away from the murder of an unarmed teenager.
The Sanford Police Department adamantly denied authorizing the release of any such information and insisted that the department did not condone such actions.
It has been just over a month since Trayvon was murdered and still no arrests have been made. Trayvon was shot by, 28-year-old George Zimmerman who claims that while he did follow the teen, Trayvon then attacked the neighborhood watch volunteer while he was heading to his vehicle. Despite being over 60 lbs heavier than Trayvon, George claims that he shot the 17 year-old in self-defense.
