Cory Booker saves neighbor

Newark Mayor Cory Booker has become a hero after saving his neighbor from a burning building.

When the New Jersey official arrived home last night, he had no idea he’d have to risk his life to save someone. Cory told CBS today that he leapt into action after his security team saw that his neighbor’s home was ablaze.

His team initially alerted the residents that their home was on fire, but a woman told them her daughter was stuck upstairs.

Although smoke was pouring from the house, Cory was determined to get inside and rescue the young woman trapped in her bedroom. He got a little pushback from Detective Alex Rodriguez at first, though. "He basically told me, ‘This woman is going to die if we don’t help her,’ and what can I say to that?," Alex told CBS. "I let him go and without thinking twice, he just ran into the flames and rescued this young lady."

Cory jumped in through the kitchen, but he admitted that he had trouble finding his way once inside. "I actually wasn’t thinking. When I got there and couldn’t find her in all the smoke, looked behind me and saw the kitchen really erupting with flames all over the ceiling, that’s when I had very clear thoughts that I’m not going to get out of this place alive and got … very religious," he recounted.

Specifically, the New Jersey official said he had a "come to Jesus" moment.

Cory recalled that the young woman guided him with her voice because all he could see in front of him was blackness. "Thankfully she started yelling out to me and I was able to find her through all the smoke. At that point I grabbed her," said Cory.

Cory said he was "not gentle" when he tossed her over his shoulder and tried to find his way out of the burning home. He could only leave the way he came in: through the kitchen. Once he made his way clear "Detective Rodriguez grabbed her as well and we got down the stairs and we both just collapsed outside the building."

Aside from suffering second degree burns during the rescue, Cory seemed no worse for wear while making the media rounds today. The young lady is still recovering in the hospital.
