At 14 weeks pregnant, 23-year-old Jasmine Moss was excited about the birth of her first child, according to family members.
But now those close to her are shocked and left in mourning, as Jasmine was found Friday evening, stabbed to death inside of her car in District Heights, Md., a Washington D.C. suburb.
What’s worse is that police believe Jasmine’s boyfriend and the father of the unborn child, Nathan Rogers, is behind the murder. Jasmine’s car was found around the corner from Nathan’s home. He was arrested Saturday morning and charged with first degree murder.
Authorities are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the tragedy, but believe the incident stemmed from a domestic dispute. Investigators are speculating that Nathan did not want Jasmine to go through with the pregnancy.
"We know that she visited him in his home,” Prince George’s County State’s Attorney Angela Alsobrooks said, according to FOX 5. “We believe that the murder occurred in the home and then what happened after that is under investigation.”
At the time of the crime, Nathan had been serving a house arrest sentence since pleading guilty to first-degree assault last year, FOX 5 reports. At a court appearance on Monday, Nathan was ordered to be given a mental evaluation and to be held without bond.
Still in grief, Jasmine’s mother Jenine Moss-Strong, told the station that she did see a change in her daughter’s relationship with Nathan prior to the killing.
"I noticed she hadn’t been spending as much time with him and I asked her if everything was okay and she said they were just trying to work things out, sort things out," Jenine, said.
"It hasn’t really hit me totally, but I’m just devastated,” she continued.
Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time the family was struck with tragedy this year. Jasmine’s uncle, Lenny Harris, was found murdered in a Fort Washington well in January after being robbed, FOX 5 reports.
