A 13-year-old student was expelled from school after her mother confronted the school’s principal about a teacher’s racial slur.
Brea Persley, a student at Century Academy For Excellence in Inglewood, Calif., told her mother that her science teacher, Kelly Dempsey, told her to “sit your nappy-headed self down.” KTLA showed video footage of Kelly who is White.
“When kids started laughing, it brought back memories of when I was in 4th grade and kids used to laugh at me and tease me,” Brea said in an interview with KTLA.
Brea’s mother, Shronda Williams, received a voicemail message from Kelly who apologized about the incident. However, the charter school’s principal, Giselle Edman, was not so sympathetic.
According to Shronda, Giselle, who is Black, said she was “happy” that the teacher made the comment and “bad things need to happen to mean kids.” Giselle then expelled Brea from school.
The family said Brea has been cited by the school once for fighting and for tardiness and gum chewing, but in a letter to Shronda, Brea was expelled “due to the fact that you scolded the principal…and your daughter used inappropriate language referring to Dr. Edman.” Giselle has yet to comment.
Brea’s family is filing a complaint with the school’s accreditation agency and trying to figure out how to finish up Brea’s last three weeks of school before summer vacation.
