Usher thinks he’s got a shot at the Oscars

Usher is returning to the big screen in a big way. The R&B superstar confirmed to the U.K.’s Independent that he will be playing boxing legend Sugar Ray Leonard in the upcoming film Hands of Stone.

“It was proper casting,” Usher said. “They approached me to do it. And all I had to do was consider it.”

Although the movie will mostly highlight the life of Panamanian boxer Roberto Duran, which will be played by Gael Garcia Bernal, Usher is getting the opportunity to act alongside not only well-known Mexican actor Gael, but Oscar winner Robert De Niro.

However, Usher is not intimidated at all. The artist is actually quite fearless.

“I’m not intimidated in any way because there’s a shared passion and respect among all of us,” Usher explained. “It’s the type of script that will allow all of us to shine.”

In fact, Usher thinks that he has a shot of the prestigious award himself.
“I’ve seen Oscar winners come out of left field.” Usher hinted. “I’m just saying Jennifer Hudson.”

Hands of Stone is set to release next year.
