According to Lil Wayne, his reasons for pulling Nicki Minaj from this year’s Summer Jam concert boiled down to one thing: respect.
“That’s a female; first and foremost Nicki Minaj is a female. I don’t know what anyone else believes, but I believe females deserve the ultimate respect at all times no matter when or where or how,” Weezy told MTV News.
Earlier this month, Weezy decided not to have Nicki perform at the New York City event after the MC for the evening, a HOT 97 radio DJ, made disparaging remarks. Lil Wayne wasn’t present when the controversial words were spoken, but he didn’t need all the details.
"As soon as she called me and told me she felt disrespected, I just declined everything. I pulled her from the show because … no person that works with me will be disrespected in my presence as long as I’m on this planet," said the Young Money front man, who assumed his artist would be treated like a princess.
"I expect the red carpet, in her manner; the pink carpet should be laid out for her," he said.
Despite the conflict, Wayne said there are no hard feelings between him and the Hot 97 staff.
Although Weezy explained that his decision to pull Nicki from the show stemmed from his respect for women, he has been criticized for his often-misogynistic lyrics.
