Gabrielle Union said she loves Dwyane Wade, but the drama with his ex has taken its toll on her.
“It’s hard because, aside from loving him, I want to protect myself,” she recently told radio host TT Torrez.
Although she’s a sought after actress who’s starred in several big-screen films and TV shows—including a new BET series on the way—Gabrielle said the rumors that put a wedge between Dwyane and his ex-wife, Siohvaughn Funches, affected her pockets.
“I built my own brand. I built my career and my career took a hit from that madness because some people refuse to see the truth, even when it’s presented to them time and time again,” she said.
“I pay for my family. I pay for my mommy and my daddy and my sisters and her family. D. doesn’t write those checks; I do. So when something is starting to affect the way I make a living, no, no, no baby. Let me figure out a way for me to protect our home,” she said.
According to recent reports, the drama continues as Siohvaughn’s attorney, Michael Haber, has asked to be released from his contract.
“Our relationship has broken down to the point that I can no longer represent [Siohvaughn Funches-Wade]," said Michael. "Our interests are adverse to one another."
Dwyane and Siohvaughn have definitely had their share of public drama—the most recent being Siohvaughn’s refusal to let him see his children on Father’s Day—and he told Oprah Winfrey that Gabrielle is a reprieve from all that.
“She makes my eyes sparkle, and you know the biggest time she makes my eyes sparkle is when Zaire comes home, homework is a little harder that day, he’s stressing, and she goes to the table with him and she sits down with him until he gets it,” he said. “I know her love is a little deeper than just me.”
