BET Network’s Music Matters is teaming up with Kendrick Lamar for a 23-city tour that kicks off this September.
“Kendrick is one of the most prolific and phenomenal artist emerging today,” BET’s Senior Director of Music Programming Kelly Griffin said in a statement. “His music, style and flow brings a fresh and important perspective to hip-hop and we are proud to leverage the BET Music Matters brand to expose his amazing talents to the masses.”
The 23-year-old Compton native has quickly made a name for himself in the wake of his acclaimed 2011 album Section.80. His ’90s-inspired West Coast hip-hop sound became a favorite among musicians (like pop icon Lady Gaga), hip-hop bloggers and fans alike.
Kendrick even caught the attention of Dr. Dre, who personally signed him to Aftermath Entertainment via Top Dawg Entertainment and Interscope Records in March.
The Music Matters Tour coincides with the release of his first studio album good kid, m.A.A.d. city, which drops October 2.
In the past, the tour has featured up-and-coming stars like Marsha Ambrosius, Estelle and Melanie Fiona. According to BET.com, Kendrick will also be joined with a to-be-announced group of fresh talents.
“More than a hip-hop show, it’s an experience worth a life time,” Kendrick said in a statement.
The Music Matters Tour cranks up September 7 in Norfolk Virginia. For a full list of dates and tour updates and ticket information, go to BET.com.
