Tia Mowry strengthened by Cree criticism

Although hearing her baby called “ugly” perturbed her, Tia Mowry said it won’t keep her from showing him off.

“He’s the biggest joy of my life. Why would I want to hide that?” Tia told Sister 2 Sister, insisting she won’t become an overprotective parent.

“The thing is that Cree lives in the real world. To overly protect him—I think—will hurt him,” she said. “This isn’t the last time somebody’s going to critique him or pick on him. Everybody has been a product of some sort of bullying.”

While she was quick to defend her son against those who vocally described her 1-year-old as “ugly,” Tia doesn’t begrudge anyone the right to free speech.

However, just because they can say it, doesn’t mean they should.

“Everyone has a right to an opinion. To control someone’s opinion, I don’t know if that’s realistic, but you can choose. There are certain things you should say, or you shouldn’t say,” said Tia, who admitted that dealing with the criticism can be difficult.

“It does hurt when you do hear things that are not positive and see things that are not positive,” she said. “We’re real people. For people to say they’re not affected by it, I don’t know if they’re being honest.”

There was an upside to the Cree criticism. Tia said she realized how lucky she is to have fans who defend her and have her back.

“I have gotten so much support and love from my fans. I never realized… I guess I never really realized the power of support from fans until this situation that came about,” she said.

According to Tia, the comments about her son freed more moms to share similar stories.

“A lot of people who kind of always wanted to say something about the issue… this was their platform to talk about it. One woman said something about how her child had Down syndrome and how nasty this world can be,” explained Tia.

While Tia could have obviously done without the haters’ input where her son is concerned, she isn’t dwelling on the negative.

“Happiness and joy and focusing on the positive is a choice,” said Tia, who plans to continue to do exactly that.

As for the criticism, she’s taking it all in stride.

“It’s making me a stronger person,” she said.

The sisters discuss avoiding the reality TV marriage curse. What steps are they taking to avoid the trap? Find out in the November 2012 issue of Sister 2 Sister.
