Usher talks custody and cheating on ‘Oprah’s Next Chapter’

Usher held nothing back when he sat down to share his story on "Opran’s Next Chapter" on Sunday.

From his ugly divorce and a high-profile custody battle with ex-wife Tameka Foster to the tragic death of her son Kile and the singer’s new relationship, aspects of Usher’s life have been a near-constant presence on gossip blogs.

The "Climax" singer told Oprah that he felt it was time for him to chat with her so that he can give his side of the stories and do it on the record. "There has been so much that has been said and I have not been able to address it," Usher said.  "[I knew that] here, I would have the opportunity to document something that someday my kids will be able to see."

For one, Usher admitted that he feels marrying Tameka was a mistake, but he did it anyway because he cared for her and wanted to do the honorable thing.

"I wanted to give her the wedding that she wanted, but I wasn’t quite ready," Usher shared. "I impregnated this woman, we were in a relationship, we were in love, so I felt like this was the right way to do things based off my own."

He continued, "I was taking responsibility because she was pregnant."

But when asked whether he loved Tameka, he confirmed that his feelings for her were very real. "Yes I did. I was in love. My mother, she definitely told me that she didn’t think that it was gonna work," Usher recalled, adding that her absence from his big day shook him. "She didn’t come to the wedding, which also played a great deal in my hesitation."

Usher and Tameka’s marriage was hounded by critics that did not like her, which left Usher feeling unsupported by fans and confused. However, he could not ignore the possibility that Tameka was perhaps unprepared for all the scrutiny and pressure that came along with married to one of her R&B’s resident heartthrobs. After a while it all began to hurt Usher and Tameka’s marriage, and he realized that things between them couldn’t last.

"I really felt the marriage was not going to work before Naviyd was born " said Usher. "When we had Usher, it was by far one of the most incredible moments of my life. I couldn’t have been more happy and after that, I did get a great sense of the insecurities that were there and the fact that she wasn’t coping well with being in this position–being married to Usher, and all that came with that."

Usher and Tameka were also hounded by rumors of his infidelity and he owned up to the fact that there were some indiscretions, although most of them not the type that most had gossiped about. Also, he revealed that towards the end of the marriage he had mentally checked out of the relationship.

"I just wanted out," Usher admitted, "I was faithful at heart but not faithful all the way. Even having a conversation with another woman, period, about matters of your relationship or emotions is, in my opinion, not being faithful."

He did admit that there were times he slept with other women. "When we were separated, yes, I was," he answered when asked if he’d ever cheated on Tameka. "We were not divorced. "

And without explicitly stating the type of indiscretion, Usher copped to allegations that he did cheat on Tameka with one of her bridesmaids. "Outside of my marriage with her and our separation and our divorce, I did have exchanges with [the bridesmaid]" Usher said before explaining that he was close with the other woman. "We were friends. She was someone who was a part of the children’s lives before and it had always been perceived that we were in a relationship or we either had some sort of exchange. This was after the marriage."

Of his relationship with Tameka these days, Usher said, We don’t see eye-to-eye."

This includes the fact that Usher has been awarded full custody of their sons, Usher V and Naviyd. After the nasty battle over custody, he’s not sure that he and Tameka could ever really be  more than cordial.

"The judge has given her a verdict, has given her order and I try my hardest to abide by that and that 100 percent," said Usher. "The friend that I was to Tameka, I don’t know that I could ever be again because I really felt like we were friends. She made us enemies in a way that I could never understand.
