Solange talks natural hair and fashion

Solange doesn’t take her style, when it comes to hair or clothes, as seriously as some do—she’s still trying to figure it out for herself.

The singer/DJ/fashion plate revealed to LURVE magazine that it’s hard to talk about her hair because so many people take the topic of locks to heart.

She recently denounced any designation assigned to her as the spokesperson for all women with natural hair, and she received a little heat for that. After all, people were theorizing about why she decided to go natural and what it means for Black women in general. That’s a lot of pressure for one head, especially considering that Solange still had a lot to learn about natural hair.

“I really, truly was not even aware that there was a natural hair system in place to measure the texture of your hair," she told LURVE. "At that point I thought to myself, ‘This is really crazy. That these people know more about my hair than the human that even carries it!’"

At that point, she made known her desire not to represent a whole group of Black women that have chosen to embrace their curls. In hindsight, though, she acknowledged that she could have chosen her words a little more wisely.

"I went to my Twitter and sort of impulsively expressed that," Solange stated. "I don’t regret it one bit, but sometimes trying to put how you feel in an one-hundred forty character structure is not really successful.”

Candidly she added, “I’m actually really trying to navigate my feelings on the entire hair issue and it’s tough doing that publicly."

Clothing is a little easier to navigate for Solange these days, but she remembers a time when she wasn’t always so stylish. And she recalls how people did not give her a pass for any fashion faux pas that she made in her youth.

“Look at my fashion choices back in the day. You know how people say ‘Who let her walk out the house that way?’ or ‘She needs more people!’” Solange recalled.

Now that she’s gotten a handle on what looks best on her and what suits her aesthetic, people are calling her a fashionista. It’s a label that still takes some getting used to for Solange, but she’s having a great time playing with clothes.

"Once I really defined my expectations in terms of how to navigate through the fashion world without getting myself too invested," she said, "I’ve had a hell of a lot of fun."
