Tyler Perry brings own spin to ‘Alex Cross’

Tyler Perry didn’t try to fill the shoes of his predecessor, Morgan Freeman, when taking on the role of Alex Cross.

“That’s Morgan ‘freakin’ Freeman. You don’t try to do anything that Morgan Freeman does. He was the voice of God in a movie,” Tyler recently joked at a press event.

Morgan, who won an Oscar for his performance in Clint Eastwood’s Million Dollar Baby, took on the role of Alex Cross in Along Came a Spider and Kiss the Girls.

Tyler said instead of trying to mimic the way Morgan brought the character to life, he put his own spin on it.

“I knew going in that I couldn’t try to be Morgan Freeman playing Alex Cross. I had to be the best Tyler Perry I could playing Alex Cross,” he explained. “So, in that sense I tried to forget everything I saw and just go in and be the best that I could with it.”

Tyler’s turn in Alex Cross, which opens October 19, will be the first in which he plays the title character and doesn’t have to spend any time in a dress.

However, he does wear a bit of artifical hair on his head.
