Shaunie confirms ‘BBW’ season 5 newbie

Royce Reed was never really part of the “Basketball Wives” inner circle, but that’s something the new cast member shouldn’t have to worry about.

“We have a new lady coming on that’s really good friends with Evelyn [Lozada] and myself. I’ve known her a few years now,” Shaunie told C Nikky and EURweb.

That will likely work to the advantage of the unnamed newbie, since the women Shaunie considers her friends, such as Evelyn and Tami Roman, seem to last a bit longer on the series. When Meeka Claxton came on board in season 3, seemingly without the prior consent of Shaunie, she was quickly ousted and shown the door.

While fans can draw their own conclusions based on past seasons, Shaunie admitted she has no idea what season 5 will bring.

“We’ve been all over the place and everybody’s somewhere separate and it’s just like, we literally—outside of like Ev and I—we literally just get together when it’s time to film. Evelyn and I keep in contact and we do stuff together throughout the year, but when it comes to everybody else, it’s kinda like we just get together when it’s time to do a show,” Shaunie explained.

Although she doesn’t know what will happen on the upcoming season, which just recently started taping, Evelyn said she hopes there’s a little less drama this time around.

“We never go into a season saying, ‘Hey, well this is what we’re going to do. I know it’s been—especially last season was a little crazy, but we kinda just go with the flow. We’re hoping it’s smooth rolling next season,” said Evelyn, who many fans expect will be more mellow this year, following her televised counseling with life coach Iyanla Vanzant.

While some accused Iyanla of publicizing her sessions with Evelyn for ratings, Evelyn said that’s definitely not the case.

“My relationship with [Iyanla] is amazing. She checks in every week and every time I get into a space, I think about her. She’s been great, genuinely helpful. We didn’t just do the show for ratings. She genuinely cared. So, that’s something that I love and respect about her.”

Since season 4, which drew a lot of criticism from viewers and celebrities alike, Evelyn said she’s grown and is trying to move forward. She’s not the only one who’s going to try to share a different side of herself for season 5.

“I need to kinda speak up more,” said Shaunie. "With what we do, we have conversations all the time that are off camera, and I think that I give great advice, but I don’t know if I take my own as well, and I’ve definitely learned that. I need to work on what I say and encouraging somebody…kinda doing it to myself sometimes."
