Jada Pinkett-Smith defends daughter’s hair

Jada Pinkett Smith says she’s fine with her tween daughter Willow’s choice to cut, dye or whip her tresses.

The mother of two took to her Facebook page to pen a letter to critics in which she defending her parenting skills, noting that the topic of her daughter’s hair is a very old one.

“The question why I would LET Willow cut her hair. First the LET must be challenged. This is a world where women, girls are constantly reminded that they don’t belong to themselves; that their bodies are not their own, nor their power or self determination,” wrote Jada who chooses to empower her daugther instead of restrict her.

“I made a promise to endow my little girl with the power to always know that her body, spirit and her mind are HER domain,” the 41-year old continued. “Willow cut her hair because her beauty, her value, her worth is not measured by the length of her hair. It’s also a statement that claims that even little girls have the RIGHT to own themselves and should not be a slave to even their mother’s deepest insecurities, hopes and desires.”

Willow, whose "I Whip My Hair" single encouraged girls of all ethnicities to take pride in their tresses, has been photographed with long hair, a shaved head and hair in every color from yellow to purple. Judging by her letter, Jada is all for it.

“Even little girls should not be a slave to the preconceived ideas of what a culture believes a little girl should be. More to come. Another day,” she wrote.

Jada’s comments stand alongside those made by her huggy Will Smith back in May. He said he and Jada have decided to show Willow how to “have command of her body.”

“If I teach her that I’m in charge of whether or not she can touch her hair, she’s going to replace me with some other man when she goes out in the world,” he told Parade magazine.
