NeNe Leakes thinks it’s hard for some Black people to truly be happy for one another.
When it was revealed that NeNe would be gracing the cover of Ebony‘s Money and Power issue, many people didn’t understand the decision. In fact, more than a few of their readers and NeNe’s detractors were verbally appalled at the reality star being the face of the issue.
As her haters demanded to know "why her," NeNe asked why not her. “I absolutely deserve to be on the cover,” she told TheDailyBeast.com. “This cover is about money, power, and respect. And it’s about a come-up story and I’m the one that had that story this year.
She went on to point out, "Not only did I come out as a reality star that was very boisterous and vivacious and outspoken and all those things. I flipped that into money and respect. And a lot of people can’t do that."
Since starting her run on "The Real Housewives of Atlanta," NeNe has opened a restaurant, released a line of moscato and designed shoes for ShoeDazzle.com. That’s just her off-camera endeavors! The reality star has also done guest spots on "Glee" and she’s a series regular on NBC’s hit sitcom "The New Normal."
But NeNe noticed one trait in her most vocal detractors. “All of the negative feedback definitely came from my own; African Americans were the ones that were the most negative,” she stated.
NeNe continued, “It’s so funny to me because I would call [the editor] over at Ebony and she would say, ‘Girl, please. Glass houses. That’s all it is. They don’t want to see you on the cover. They don’t really understand the reason why you’re on the cover; they don’t know your story.’”
For it’s part, Ebony stands by its decision to put NeNe on the cover because NeNe’s story falls in line with the meteoric rises of other successful Black people.
“Those who take issue with reality television’s role in pop culture have questioned whether Ebony made the right decision by glorifying one of its most popular characters,” said Ebony Editor-In-Chief Amy Dubois Barnett. “It is Ebony’s role to both reflect the aesthetics and interests of our readership, and to inspire them toward higher aspirations for themselves and for all African Americans."
