Common pays it forward as mentor

Common will be spending time mentoring two future leaders this summer, and he needs aunts, uncles, parents and teachers to nominate the talented young adults in their lives for the opportunity.

Working with Coca-Cola’s Pay It Forward initiative, the rapper/actor will allow two of the four winners to shadow him and his team while focusing on community activism and music.

BET’s Debra Lee and Magic Johnson will also be partnered with promising young adults between the ages of 16 and 21.

“It ties in with what I’m about, giving young people a chance to step toward their dreams,” Common told Sister 2 Sister.

While Common said he wants it to be a fun experience for the winners, he also wants to help hone their passion and give them a genuine idea of what life in the entertainment industry is about.

“We’re looking for someone who really cares, someone who’s really passionate,” he said. We’re looking for “someone who wants to achieve some things in life and wants to do something, no matter where they come from.”
