T.D. Jakes not all about the glitz

T.D. Jakes will be honored with the “Award for Education” at the 2013 BET Honors ceremony, set to air Monday at 9 p.m. EST on BET.

The Bishop of The Potter’s House ministry spoke to Sister 2 Sister about the most memorable aspect of his life to date.

“Traveling around the world, getting to touch lives globally has been very, very meaningful to me,” he said. “It’s not always the glitzy moments that mean the most; sometimes it’s down in the trenches on death row working with people who are in trouble, in crisis, in homeless shelters. Things that people don’t see, that ultimately give me the most gratification.”

The best-selling author walked down the red carpet with his wife of more than 30 years, Serita, and she is thrilled that T.D. has stayed humble through all his success.

“Watching him rally and walk from step to step from being very meager in West Virginia to going to Africa and visiting with kings and presidents, and knowing that on the inside he is still the same person,” Serita told S2S.

T.D. Jakes is the chief pastor to 30,000 members in Dallas at his non-denominational mega-church. T.D. has received many awards through his lifetime, and has another one to add to his collection that he appreciates.

"BET Honors” will be hosted by Gabrielle Union, and other honorees this year include Halle Berry, Chaka Khan, Clarence Avant, and Lisa Leslie.
