In 2010 we lost our beloved Teena Marie—one of R&B’s greats. At the time of her death, she had just finished recording her album Beautiful at her Pasadena home. It needed only finishing touches, so Teena’s daughter, Alia Rose, stepped in to wrap things up in the studio and in the boardroom.
“I did the mixing and mastering. She didn’t have a record deal at the time, and I negotiated the deal with Universal,” Alia said. Beautiful, in stores now, is reminiscent of Teena’s 2004 album La Dona, according to Alia. “It has that kind of vibe to me. it’s very spiritual, actually.”
