Michelle Obama skips Grammys

Michelle Obama has decided to skip the Grammys in order to attend the funeral of a fallen Chicago teen.

Although Michelle was nominated for Best Spoken Word Album  for the audio version of her book American Grown, White House officials said she has no plans to attend the award ceremony in Los Angeles this weekend.

Instead of possibly delivering an acceptance speech (or graciously clapping for the winner), the first lady has decided to attend the funeral of Hadiya Pendleton. As the Chicago Sun Times reports, Michelle will be accompanied by senior presidential advisor Valerie Jarrett and Arne Duncan, the secretary of education. Chicago Mayor Rahm Emmanuel will also be at the funeral, but it’s not clear whether he will speak.

Hadiya was shot dead just days after she participated in inaugural festivities last month. She performed as a majorette with the King College Prep School band during a party.

With the first lady attending the Hadiya’s funeral, the community has been assured that her homegoing service will not be politicized.

“There absolutely will be no talk about the gun issue,” said Rev. Courtney Maxwell of Greater Deliverance Temple Church of Christ, who will deliver Hadiya’s eulogy at Saturday’s service. “We want to talk about celebrating her life and not get into a political situation as it relates to guns.”
