Being single on Valentine’s Day is not the end of the world if you ask Shonda Rhimes.
The "Scandal" creator went on a rant when one fan asked her if she had "something to say for all the ladies who are alone on Valentine Day" in hopes of cheering up those flying solo on the most romantic day of the year.
"Here is what I say to all the ladies who are alone on Valentines Day: please do not ever use these words ‘ladies who are alone on Valentine’s Day’ together in a sentence ever again. Ever. Again," Shonda started.
Reminding everyone that whether you are attached or not, Shonda said V Day shouldn’t make a difference because it’s just another day of the year that shouldn’t be any more significant than the other 364. And she suggested that single ladies focus on the love they do have in their lives, despite not having someone special.
"Go. Be happy with the people you love and who love you," she wrote before rattling off a list of things to do tomorrow that ranged from the reasonable to the comically impossible. "See a friend. Read a book. Flirt with a cute boy (or girl). Dance it out. Watch a movie. Have a party. Build a robot. Stop a Zombie Apocalypse. Take over the Earth. Paint your toenails. Eat soup. DO ANYTHING."
But of all the things a single girl should not do on Valentine’s Day, she warned women against feeling sorry for themselves. "DO NOT buy into the idea that a day created by greeting card companies should be more romantic than other day or should make you feel lonelier than any other day. ‘Cause life is awesome. And [feeling lonely because of it] is stupid. And a waste of perfectly good time."
Adding that single women don’t need cheering up on Valentine’s Day because "THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH YOU," Shonda believes single women should just disregard everything that tells them they should feel bad for being alone. "You are perfect and awesome just like you are. You just happen to be listening to someone who says you aren’t. They are idiots. Ignore them," she said.
Not to mention, the free time to focus on them might be just the thing some women need to enter into their own greatness and purpose. Having a beau might eat up the time you need to create the very thing that could make all of their other dreams come true. "FYI? A lot of great things can happen to you while you are single," Shonda pointed out. "I came up with a show called ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ while I was single. Just saying."
In conclusion, Shonda reiterated that women should focus on something other than their single status, declaring, "Fuck Valentine’s Day. Go do something with your life."
