Though she’s living the Hollywood life now, Draya Michele explained that she’s just a girl from a small town who’s grateful for “Basketball Wives: LA.”
“I just didn’t know with ’Basketball Wives’ if I was going to make it out alive. I didn’t know if I was going to come out of this with a clean face or a clean image. I didn’t know what was going to happen, so it was a gamble,” she told Rolling Out magazine. “I won.”
Things did seem dicey for Draya when she was first introduced to “Basketball Wives: LA” viewers during season 1. Laura Govan and Gloria Govan Barnes weren’t exactly welcoming to Draya, whose past raised eyebrows for the sisters.
Her cast mates questioned her past, physically knocked her down in the boxing ring and accused her of being a bad mother and a jump-off.
However, Draya ended up a fan favorite and won over her co-stars. In season 2, she was invited into the circle.
“I’m very pleased with how everything has turned out. I didn’t know that it was going to turn in my favor, so I’m very thankful and very blessed,” she said.
For those who find it hard to reconcile her small-town upbringing with what they see on TV, Draya admits that she fits the stereotype of someone who cut loose after leaving home.
“For me to get out and break out into this Hollywood life, I take it a little bit different. I’m not raised in this. I came out to Hollywood, and got a little wild, and I had fun. I met new people, and my life has changed. People have to know that I’m partying and I’m doing all this, but I get my a** up everyday, and I go to work…in the daytime. I come alive at nighttime. I work in the day,” said Draya who now has her own line of bathing suits.
The urban model is no stranger to bikinis and lingerie, and she thinks her wardrobe may be one reason women don’t necessarily take to her at first glance.
“Some women don’t like me because they don’t understand me. They don’t know the history; they don’t know where I come from,” she said. “So there’s a little bit of a misunderstanding. They think that I’m dressing for attention when, in reality, I’m just a free spirit.”
