Zoe Saldana really doesn’t care who thinks she’s Black enough to play Nina Simone.
A lot of people do not like the fact that Zoe will be playing Nina in a biopic. Critics, including Nina’s own daughter, have made their opinion on the casting known ever since it was announced that Zoe would be starring in Nina.
Public outcry ramped up when the first shots of Zoe as Nina came out, showing that she actually put on makeup to darken her skin. After months of being blasted for the role, Zoe is finally breaking her silence on all the negativity surrounding her casting.
”What kept me from getting stressed or being hurt by the negative comments is that I’m doing it for my sisters; I’m doing it for my brothers,” Zoe told HipHollywood.com at Alfre Woodard’s 4th Annual Cinema Sisters Soiree. “And I don’t care who tells me that I am not this and I am not that. I know who I am and I know what Nina Simone means to me. So, that is my truth and that set me free ”
Despite the unkind comments, questioning her ability to play the role, Zoe determined that she would remain as humble as possible and accept the reviews, whatever they may be. “If it comes back in a negative fashion or positive, I’m going to keep my chin up,” said Zoe, who pointed out that that is a character trait she shares with Nina. “That’s who I am, and that’s who I’ll be. And Nina was like that, too.”
She concluded, “I did it all for love. Out of love for Nina, my people and who I am and my pride of being a Black woman and a Latina woman and an American woman. That’s my truth.”
