Centric enlisted the help of Fantasia Barrino to hold what was undoubtedly the best happy hour that Washington D.C. has seen in a very long time.
The network gathered Black tastemakers from around the area for a well deserved cocktail, delectable munchies and a stellar performance by Fantasia for the second stop of Centric’s Happy Hour tour.
While hitting the bar in the middle of the week may not be on the agenda for some people (especially ahead of a predicted snow storm), the Fillmore in Silver Spring, Maryland, was packed for the invite-only event. When S2S arrived, fans were lined up around the corner to see the soulful singer with the powerhouse-performance style.
Before Fantasia made it to the stage, though, she had a quick meet and greet session with special guests from WHUR backstage at the Fillmore. Upstairs, professionals decked out in the after-work best mingled and sipped on complimentary while enjoying a slamming mix supplied by the station.
Centric had turned the relatively stark performance space of the Fillmore into a cozy-yet-posh little club complete with a VIP section. Those lucky enough to be considered very important were treated to the best seats in the house because they could sit front row on trendy couches while nibbling on free appetizers. While we were in there it was clear that some were noticeably taking way more advantage the spread than most (we saw one woman clean out a tray of cheeseburger sliders by herself)!
The network was also gracious enough to provide a candy buffet that was stocked well enough to satisfy every sweet tooth!
Around 9 p.m., Fantasia blasted onto the stage with “Get It Right, ” bounding up to the mic and clapping with such energy that a piece of jewelry fell from her hand before she’d even sung a note. Embodying everything that is fantastic about a Fantasia show, “Get It Right” was a pitch perfect start to the hourlong show.
Although she stomped onto the stage in a fabulous pair of shoes, she stepped out of her stilettos by “Free Yourself,” the third song in her set. “I tried to be cute,” she said, “but at least I came out cute!”
From there Fantasia debuted on her new tracks “If I Were A Bird” (come back tomorrow for more on that)! Fanny didn’t hog the spotlight, though. During a very emotional part of the performance where she stepped out into crowd, she gave her backup singers some shine, asking each of them to show the audience what they can really do!
After that, Fantasia began her light-hearted ballad “When I See You” with a soulful run before getting into the melody which puts the days of high school crushes to music.
Fanny finished the show with her new track “Lose To Win,” confessing “I lost everything.”
Explaining what the song means to her, Fantasia told her fans. “Sometimes God’s got to take the bad stuff out to put the good stuff in [your life].”
