As beautiful as Kelly Rowland is, she hasn’t always loved being fabulously brown.
These days Kelly is known as much for her impeccable skin tone as she is for hot vocals on tracks like “Motivation,” “Ice” and “Kisses Down Low.” She owns it and represents for brown-skinned beauties.
That didn’t come easy, though. She revealed to EURWeb.com that there was a time in her life when she struggled with accepting her complexion–let alone love it.
“You know what I had great women in my life to help me overcome that. I remember I went through a period where I didn’t embrace my chocolatiness,” she shared. “I didn’t embrace my chocolate lifestyle. Just being a chocolate, lovely, brown-skin girl and being proud of that.”
Kelly revealed that she was so adverse to being dark-skinned that she tried to avoid spending too much time in the sun. That is, until Beyonce’s mom, Tina Knowles, gave her a wake-up call.
“I remember being out in the sun and I was trying to shield myself from the sun and [Beyoncé's mom Tina Knowles] said, ‘Are you crazy?’” Kelly recalled. “She said, ‘You are absolutely gorgeous’ and just told me how beautiful I was and how rare chocolate is and how gorgeous the skin is–and all of this stuff. And I was just like ,‘Yeah!’ Like a light went off.”
Kellysaid she finally got the point and began to own it. “Between her and my mother [it had] me sitting out in the sun a little more, just to be a little more chocolate,” Kelly said with a laugh. “You embrace it. You just embrace everything that you are as a woman.”
