The cost of fame may have just gone up for Michelle Obama, Beyoncé, Jay-Z and other celebs who are apparently victims of hacking.
Paris Hilton, Kim Kardashian, Hulk Hogan, Donald Trump and Sarah Palin were also victimized according to The New York Daily News. In all, nearly a dozen celebs were targeted.
According to ABC News, the FBI is looking for the hacker responsible for posting the personal information.
“The Department is aware of the report and the FBI is investigating the matter,” a Department spokesperson told ABC.
Sensitive information, such as addresses, social security numbers, credit card numbers, bank accounts and telephone numbers were reportedly posted to exposed.su; although, it seems most of the telephone numbers weren’t accurate.
As a matter of fact, one former FBI agent doubts the accuracy of the information, citing that it’s extremely rare for someone to share such sensitive and valuable information once obtained.
“I’m very suspect,” Brad Garrett told ABC. “It goes against the very reason you steal them; it’s to use them,” he said guessing that the whole incident is a prank or hoax to get attention.
It wasn’t just well-known celebs who were attacked, LAPD Chief Charlie Beck, who is working with authorities to track down the hacker, also had his information posted in the site’s “Secret Files.”
There’s little debate about whether the postings crossed ethical lines, but they also cross legal lines, according to LAPD officer Frank Preciado. However, it’s not clear what type of prosecution, if any, the suspects or site might face if prosecuted.
