Just when it seemed that things couldn’t get worse in the increasingly violent city of Chicago, a baby was shot five times as her father was changing her diaper.
NBCNews.com reported that 6-month-old Jonylah Watkins later died in a Comer Children’s Hospital after multiple unsuccessful surgeries. Her father, 29-year-old Jonathan Watkins, was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where he is in stable condition after being shot in the left side and right buttock. He was also grazed in the face.
The shooting happened around the 6500 block of South Maryland Avenue at approximately 12:45p.m. Tuesday.
Chicago police, who noted Jonathan Watkins’ extensive criminal history and gang ties, are looking into a claim that someone had previously threatened him via Facebook.
Police also said that the gunman emerged from a gangway and opened fire on Jonathan who was standing by the minivan’s open front passenger-side door, changing Jonylah’s diaper on the seat, according to The Chicago Tribune, which also reported that the gunman fled to a nearby parking lot, got into a blue conversion van and sped north.
Pastor Corey Brooks of New Beginnings Church in Woodlawn is offering up to $5,000 for information leading to the capture of the gunman.
