The Brunswick Police Department followed an anonymous tip that they received from a caller who reported that someone was crouched in the back seat of a vehicle that was driving away from the shooting last Thursday, according to www.khou.com.
After hours of following up on the tip, Glynn County Detectives were able to make an arrest, a 15-year-old boy (his age was originally reported as 14). The boy’s statements then led them to another arrest, 17-year-old De’Marquise Elkins who taken into custody just a few hours later.
De’Marquise is being charged with murder in the shooting death of 13-month-old Antonio Santiago.
Baby Antonio’s mother, Sherry West, told police that the incident started in broad daylight with De’Marquise and a younger boy approached her demanding money.
“A boy approached me and told me he wanted my money, and I told him I didn’t have any money. And he said, ‘Give me your money or I’m going to kill you and I’m going to shoot your baby and kill your baby,’ and I said, ‘I don’t have any money,’ and ‘Don’t kill my baby,’ ” Sherry told reporters.
The distraught mother noted that she was not sure if she had been previously chosen or just selected at random.
According to CNN, one of the boys attempted to grab her purse, and opened fire, grazing her head, when she tried to tell them she didn’t have any money. She then said one of the boys shot her in the leg, before walking over to the stroller and shooting the baby in the face.
The tragic event seemed to have a particularly profound impact on rapper Lupe Fiasco, who took to Twitter Sunday, posting 19 tweets about the effect of violence in hip hop and in all media. One of the posts referenced the incident specifically. It read: “Then you turn on the news and see that a 12 month old got shot in the face by two teenagers in Georgia for no reason at all,” tweeted the Chicago MC.
“The you hear a song on the radio talking about “shooting everyone in sight”///bad times man…f***…”
Brenda Moses, whose son is the 15-year-old suspect, claims that her son was merely a witness, and did nothing wrong.
A memorial service was held on Friday for baby Antonio. His body was cremated.
