Toddler fatally shoots 2-year-old sister with rifle

pink rifleIt was deemed a “crazy accident” by the local coroner, but this case might carry much larger implications at a time when gun control is under the national microscope.

A 5-year-old Kentucky boy shot and killed his 2-year-old sister, Caroline Sparks, with a .22 caliber rifle while the children’s mother was at the house cleaning.

“It’s just one of those nightmares,” said State Police Trooper Bill Gregory, “a quick thing that happens when you turn your back.”

Setting this case apart from other firearm mishaps is that it was no accident that the boy, Kristian, wound up with the rifle. In fact, the rifle, a smaller gun known as a ‘Crickett,’ is actually marketed to young boys with the slogan “My First Rifle.” The boy was apparently used to shooting the weapon and had received the gift for his birthday.

According to local news outlet WKYT, the children’s mother, Stephanie Sparks, heard the gun go off while she was on the porch cleaning. Upon hearing the shot, she ran in and found the little girl. The family says they were unaware that a bullet remained in the gun.

No word yet on what, if any, criminal charges will be filed in this case.

“It was God’s will. It was her time to go, I guess,” Caroline’s grandmother told WLEX. “I just know she’s in heaven right now and I know she’s in good hands with the Lord.”
