At 14-years-old, Jaden’s ready to be his own man, which means he’d need to get a divorce from his famous folks Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith. With Jaden’s 15th birthday looming, Will revealed that his son wanted one very specific gift.
“He says, ‘Dad, I want to be emancipated.’ I know if we do this, he can be an emancipated minor, because he really wants to have his own place,” Will told The Herald Sun with a laugh.
Will and Jada have provided their children with a pretty open home environment, giving them plenty of space to discover and experiment on their own. The Smith parents have never put a lot of constraints on their kids, and it seems that Will sees Jaden’s request as an extension of that.
Without indicating whether he and Jada will grant Jaden’s birthday wish, Will said, “That’s the backlash. On the other side, if kids just want to have command of their lives, I understand.”
It’s not that Jaden doesn’t love his family, he has a very close relationship with his parents and siblings which often results in a lot of creative collaborations. Currently, the teen actor is starring alongside his old man in the summer action block buster After Earth, which will debut May 31.
