A Black Man’s Love for His Daughter
It’s a rare thing these days to go to a movie or turn on the TV and see a Black man making his young daughter the priority in his life. Even on the critically acclaimed classic, “The Cosby Show,” Cliff Huxtable had to split his attention among five kids and a wife, but in Fruitvale, it’s clear that Oscar Grant is a loving father, trying his best to make a family for his daughter and girlfriend. Unlike so many sitcoms, it does it in a serious way, without the slapstick and humor that sometimes makes light of the father-daughter relationship.
While Oprah Winfrey and Iyanla Vanzant host specials about fatherless daughters, it’s refreshing to witness a Black dad catering to his little girl the way many women only dream.
