‘School Daze’ update in the works
Spike Lee is heading back to college! The famous director dropped an interesting tidbit when he sat down for a very special chat with Black&Sexy TV: He’s doing an update to his classic film School Daze.
It wouldn’t really be accurate to call it a sequel or a remake, though. “I have the script for School Daze,” Spike menioned. “But, what people have to understand is that it’s a contemporary version. So it’s the same school, Mission College, 25 years later.”
Casting hasn’t begun yet, but he’s got some ideas of who he’d like to bring back from the original. “Hopefully I can get Laurence Fishburne to play Dap. He’ll be the president now of the school. And we would deal with issues that are around Historically Black Colleges today,” Spike explained.
A lot of the issues may be the same, but Spike has already written some more modern themes into the script.
“Homophobia, that’s a big one. That’s a big subject in this one,” Spike said. “Still some class issues. Still some issues with color and hair texture. But it’s what’s happening today.”
