Tameka Raymond is speaking out about what she’s been through since her son, Usher V, nearly drowned last week.
The former stylist revealed to ABC News that her immediate reaction to the news that her son had had an accident while playing in his father’s pool was anger. “I was mad because I was like, ‘How did this happen? Who was watching him? Why was my son underwater for nearly three minutes?’” she recalled.
Tameka knew that something was wrong when her ex-husband Usher called her during a dentist’s appointment. Even though they work together to co-parent their sons, Usher V and Naviyd, their communication is more functional than social.
“He doesn’t call regularly,’” said Tameka. “When I saw his number come up, I immediately jumped up because I figured, ‘He has the boys, I need to get this.’”
The accident was particularly alarming for Tameka, who lost another son Kile Glover last year following a tragic jetski accident. When Usher, called her with the news that Usher V had nearly died, it was the worst kind of flashback. “It was like, I relived [Kile's accident]. My brain went into all those modes,” she shared.
Within hours of getting to hospital to sit at her son’s bedside, Tameka filed for an emergency custody hearing.
“I didn’t blame him for it. I just was angry that it happened on his watch,” Tameka said, before pointing out that this probably would not have happened if she were watching the boys. “While accidents happen, never have my children been injured on my watch.”
It was her hope that she would be able to take Usher and his brother Naviyd home with her once the older boy was released from the hospital. Unfortunately for her, a judge dismissed her request, but she’s still seeking some adjustments to their custody agreement. Now that Usher V’s been released, they’re both home with dad Usher.
“I’d like to have my first right of refusal. When he is not present, that the kids come home to their mom. They don’t stay home with the nanny and watch whatever show he’s on,” Tameka stated.
“Things that are precious moments–milestone moments–I’m just missing them,” said Tameka, who added that she doesn’t harbor any ill will towards Usher. “He is the father of my children, and I love my kids more than life itself.”
