Like many music lovers who grew up in the ‘90s, Drew Sidora remains a TLC fan, and that was before she found out how much she had in common with group member T-Boz.
Not only did Drew portray the raspy-voiced rapper in CrazySexyCool: The TLC Story, which airs tonight on VH1, she was shocked to realize they’re kindred spirits.
“We’re both from the Midwest, both Tauruses. We were on the phone for probably five hours [the first time we spoke]. I just really connected with her,” said Drew who also relates to T-Boz’s struggle with sickle cell anemia.
“A lot of my friends suffered from sickle cell,” explained Drew whose father used to contribute his medicinal skills to a camp for those suffering from the disease. “I understood and connected with her in that regard. I was able to understand what it feels like for her.”
Drew used to accompany her father, a doctor, to those summer programs for young sickle cell patients, and she witnessed more than one friend experiencing an episode.
“In those scenes where I had to portray her crisis situations that she went through in her life, it helped me portray it a little more. If you don’t understand what the disease is, I think people would misconceptualize what it would look like. I was able to capture physically how much in pain she was. That was very important to me,” Drew said.
There’s more to this story. Find out how Drew and T-Boz are teaming up inside the November 2013 issue of Sister 2 Sister.
