For years, the television landscape has been littered with tons of court shows, but few compare to “Supreme Justice with Judge Karen,” starring the sassy Karen Mills-Francis.
From her stylish blonde haircut to her downright jazzy and bold personality, Judge Karen is making her mark in the TV game, one case at a time.
Though there are plenty of judicial benches occupied by witty, no-nonsense legal minds, Judge Karen said she never doubted that she’d be selected to preside over the syndicated series.
“When I went to audition for the show for the first time in New York, there were seven other judges there, but I just knew that they were going to pick me. I don’t know how I knew; I just knew it,” she told Sister 2 Sister.
It’s only fitting that a network would opt to go with the outspoken, yet kindhearted judge who makes no apologies for her rulings and is adamant about getting to the root of the problem, instead of just placing a band-aid over the situation.
“What I’ve learned on the bench and in life is that people aren’t usually fighting about the thing that they are in court about. They aren’t fighting over the broken cell phone or the unpaid rent; they are fighting over something that is going on in the relationship: the ‘he left me for another woman’, or ‘you were his favorite child,'” she explained. “I like helping people get to the truth of what they are fighting about.”
Oftentimes, the cases in court TV just look so unreal, but Judge Karen denies any scripted, made-for-TV drama in her courtroom. According to her, what you see is truly what it is and what you get.
“All of our cases are real cases. My part is never scripted. I don’t know anything about the case before I go out there and I think it makes it more organic and makes it real,” she explained. “I have no preconceived notions and have not made any decisions ahead of time. I [also] get to feel people out for who they are.”
