Actress/singer Tatyana Ali was on hand this past weekend to take part in Toyota’s fourth annual Green Initiative events that took place during the Magic City Classic Weekend in Birmingham, Alabama.
As a member of the Toyota Green Initiative Coalition, along with fellow actor/model Lance Gross, eco-friendly business owners and entrepreneurs, and winners of Toyota’s Green Initiative Campus Contest, from around the country, Tatyana travels with TGI to various HBCU campuses, spreading news about green living, improving your health and reducing your carbon footprint. She joins the team to talk to students and show them how to make “greener” choices in their every day lives.
In addition to participating in a forum held by members of the coalition, Tatyana even got down and dirty with Toyota and community volunteers to help build a small vegetable and herb garden at the Jerry D. Coleman Community Center in Fairfield, Alabama. Volunteers also installed energy-efficient light bulbs while encouraging and educating community members on the benefits of these additions for the center.
This year’s TGI tour, which includes pit stops at 27 different HBCUs, is taking it up a notch as 22 of those schools will be receiving a one-year lease for a Toyota Prius to use as they see fit. “The schools use vehicles in their own fleets for whatever they use them for: recruiting, student recruiting, you know, stuff like that. This car will serve that purpose,” said Jim Colon, vice president of Toyota Product Communications. “The school will save some money. We’re trying to help the schools save their own resources.”
This year’s tour kicked off October 25 at Bowie State and will end at the SWAC Basketball Tournament in Houston, Texas, on March 15, 2014. To learn more about green living or what tour stops will in a city near you, visit toyotagreen.com.
