Ashanti’s usually wearing a smile, but that’s not to suggest that the singer hasn’t endured any heartbreak or pain at the hands of Nelly or former manager Irv Gotti.
The former Murder Inc. siren told Hot 97 radio that she’s been scarred by her relationship with Nelly—much of which was hidden from the public—and hurt by Irv’s allegations that she was disloyal to the label.
“I feel like it’s time to kinda set the record straight on what it really is,” Ashanti said in regard to Irv. “I’mma Libra. I’m a very loyal person. Anybody with any sense of logic could see that. I rode out. I told ’til the wheels fell off.”
Ashanti said she’s been hearing rumors that Irv questioned her commitment to Murder Inc., especially when the label ran into legal troubles. She didn’t rush to set the record straight, but she’s now contradicting Irv’s version of events.
“I’m not going to sit here and let the picture be painted one sided anymore,” she said. “I feel like when I hear the interviews and he’s going on about being disloyal. I have to make it duly noted, that’s not what it was.”
According to Ashanti, she even left a job in Canada to be in court to support Irv, despite the fact that she wasn’t exactly pleased with how the budget was being handled over at Murder Inc.
Part of the issue was Ashanti’s relationship with Nelly. Though the public wasn’t privy to details of their relationship, she said there was some good and bad.
“When people are around each other for a long time, there are feelings and there are things there and people get hurt. Men handle hurt differently than women handle hurt,” she said. “We definitely scarred each other, in a sense.”
Ashanti admitted that more than one track on her album Braveheart, has to do with her relationship with Nelly. “I’m revealing very much more than I have on previous records,” she said.
As for where things stand now between the two, Ashanti said they’re giving one another space.
“The space where I’m kinda like focusing on my career. He’s focusing on what he’s doing. There are a lot of things that happened this year. A lot of things went public more than other things have gone public before. I have to do me. We’re in that space right now, and there are things that were said and things there done that probably shouldn’t have been said or done,” she said, admitting that they’re both at fault.
