Porsha Stewart has hit the books and brushed up on her knowledge of the historical Underground Railroad after intimating that it was an actual train.
“When I watch that, I realized that was another Porsha moment…a little airy there, a little brain lapse,” she admitted on “Watch What Happens Live.”
Porsha said that blunder wasn’t as humorous as some other she’s made on the show, and that’s why she took steps to make sure it doesn’t happen again.
“Unlike when I saw myself say, ‘265,’ where I thought it was funny…I felt like I definitely need to correct that, even for myself. I went back and I just brushed up on what I already know,” she said, referring to a season 5 scene in which she referred to the 265 days of the year.
Fans of the show likely won’t soon forget the scene in which Porsha seemed to wonder about how runaway slaves were able to escape to freedom on an actual locomotive.
“There had to be an opening for the railroad at some point ‘cause somebody’s driving the train. It’s not electric like we have now,” Porsha said.
Her “Real Housewives of Atlanta” co-stars, Kandi Burruss and Phaedra Parks, attempted to educate her, but Cynthia Bailey said what many were thinking: Porsha’s misunderstanding was not fitting of the granddaughter of a civil rights leader.
“That’s a very sensitive topic for me,” said Porsha. “I went back and I read up on the Underground Railroad. I do want to represent that part of my life and my legacy better than I did,” said Porsha.
While many criticized her for the mistake, Porsha blamed her comments on the fast-paced conversation she was having with the ladies about how the enslaved Blacks were able to access the space under an old Savannah church.
“At that moment, we were all trying to figure something out and my brain was just going so fast. It was going faster than I was speaking. I literally just couldn’t get it together at that moment,” she said.
