Tamera Mowry-Housley found it hard to hold herself together while talking about racism she’s faced after marrying a White man.
During their appearance on OWN’s “Where Are They Now,” Tia and Tamera talked about their families. Although people are much more accustomed to seeing her bubbly personality on “Tia & Tamera” and “The Real,” Tamera got really sad when the topic of race came up.
“See this is where I get emotional because it’s hurtful,” Tamera said, choking back tears and wiping her eyes. “People choose to look past love and spew hate. That’s what hurts me because I have never experienced so much hate ever in my life.”
Tamera touched on the prejudice briefly before her 2011 wedding aired on Style in season 1 of “Tia & Tamera.” Since then it seems that the nasty comments have only gotten worse, intensifying to the point where some call her Blackness into question because of who she chose to be with.
“I get called ‘White man’s whore;’ The new one was ‘Back in the day you cost $300, but now you’re giving it to him for free,’” Tamera tearfully recalled. “This is the big one: They say, ‘Oh, Tia’s a true Black woman because she married a Black man.’ I’m lesser of a Black person because I married White?”
The rejection from some in the Black community hits Tamera especially hard because her own parents had a similar relationship.
“It’s very hard for me to think of it because I’m a product of [an interracial relationship],” Tamera reminded viewers. My mom is a beautiful Black woman and my dad is an amazing White man and I grew up seeing a family.”
None of the negativity has caused Tamera to rethink her relationship with her husband Adam Housley. It’s just made her that much more earnest about their union. “I love my husband so much,” she asserted. “I love our family. I love our dynamic. I’m proud to be in the relationship I am because it’s based on love. Pure love.”
