There are singers whose musical careers started after first appearing on reality TV shows that turned them into household names, but Tamar Braxton wants to remind viewers that she’s not part of that group.
“The difference is I’m not a lucky girl who got a chance to be on a reality show and decided to do a record,” Tamar told the Associated Press. “I am a singer who’s on a reality show, who got an opportunity to do an album, so it was backwards for me. I was always a singer first, and I will always be a singer first.”
Tamar, who has been nominated for three Grammys, started her music career years ago as a member of The Braxtons, a group featuring her sisters. However, she has often been lumped in with reality stars-turned-singers.
NeNe Leakes recently compared her co-star, Porsha Williams, to the Braxton family’s youngest sibling. “It worked for Tamar, so hopefully, it will work for Porsha,” NeNe said commenting on Porsha’s plans to launch a music career.
Fans of “Braxton Family Values” likely remember season 1 in which Tamar and hubby/manager Vince Herbert bumped heads over her career. However the couple’s spin-off show, “Tamar & Vince” followed the two as Vince helped navigate her to a Grammy nomination.
“I knew when she got the album together, she’d be great,” Vince said.
