Michael B. Jordan learned love lessons from ‘That Awkward Moment’

MichaelBJordanLife imitated art for actor Michael B. Jordan who said he learned a lot about love from his new romantic comedy That Awkward Moment.

“I think the character taught me a lot about relationships,” Michael told Vulture.com. “When I shot the film, I’d never had a real girlfriend before. I literally met my now-ex-girlfriend the day I got back from filming, almost a year ago today. That was the first time I’ve ever worked to make a relationship work out—you know, really put in the effort. It’s not easy.”

What seemingly has come easy for Michael is picking memorable, arguably iconic, roles from playing Wallace on HBO’s acclaimed series “The Wire,” to portraying Oscar Grant in Fruitvale Station.

With such dramatic parts to his credit, romantic comedy was something new for Michael.

“You’ve always heard about comedic timing and that it’s so important, but you don’t really understand what that is until you’re first-hand in it,” he told The Hollywood Reporter.

The same could likely be said for relationships, and Michael is learning his way.

“Sometimes you gotta work through the hard stuff and sometimes two people grow apart, and that’s the harsh reality. That’s what love is sometimes…knowing when it’s time to let something go, just realizing something’s not working,” he told Vulture.

Though he’s not had a ton of experience with love, Michael considers himself the type of man who tries to treat women right.

“I try to make things work. I am a good guy. I don’t like to entertain too many women at one time,” he said, rejecting the stereotypical “playa” persona.

Unlike so many romantic comedies, the men are the narrators in Awkward, giving women the pleasure of gazing upon rock-hard bodies and gaining some insight into how some men think.

“Women have a different process as far as trusting, opening up, feelings, what they want, what their expectations are for guys,” he explained. “Guys are just a little slower to come around the curve. We take our time, but when we do fall, we fall hard. So, it’s kind of cool to give girls a look [at the male experience]—like, cut us some slack.”
