Though they’re married now, Kandi Burruss explained that she’s been spending less time with her hubby since they tied the knot, but being the no nonsense woman she is, Kandi’s determined to make their marriage work.
“We went from seeing each other and being together every day to a long-distance relationship,” Kandi told Ebony.com. “Not yet, actually. I guess we still don’t feel married yet.”
Kandi said she and husband Todd Tucker, who she first met on the set of “The Real Housewives of Atlanta,” are in a long-distance relationship at the moment because he is producing a new show for TVOne called “Hollywood Divas,” which is based in L.A. If possible, they may get to see each other on the weekends.
“I actually was getting really upset, almost crying. I called him fussing one day and, as I was fussing, he came through the door and surprised me. To me, you have to do things like that and make your relationship a priority. Our new rule is to not let two weeks go by without spending time together. That’s the limit,” she said.
Kandi and Todd understand how important it is to keep outside influences to a minimum in their relationship. That may have been a lesson taught the hard way by Kandi’s very vocal and opinionated mother. While moms may sometimes be an exception, Kandi said couples should not discuss certain situations with “outsiders” because others always want to put their two cents in.“You may be doing more damage than good,” Kandi told Bossip.com.
As a newlywed, it’s likely Kandi has received a good bit of counsel–whether solicited or not–from those who already have a few years of matrimony to their credit. She’s already found some of it useful.
“Of course, everyone says communication is key. I agree. Actually, I think that’s why Todd and I have worked as a couple for so long… In fact, I need to step my call game up throughout the day. And if we have disagreements, I’m less inclined to want to talk about it. He wants to talk everything out. That’s helped me get better with my communication,” she said.
Kandi is not only focused on her marriage, but the former Xscape singer is always developing her brand as well. “I’ve learned a lot of things. First, when you’re trying to start a business, before you even tell anyone about it, buy the web domain for it, all the social media tags, get your trademarks, everything because as soon as you start talking about it, someone else will snatch it up.”
“Another thing: if you want to go into a business in which you don’t have any experience, you need to intern in that field to gain your own contacts and relationships. Relationships are everything!” said Kandi who offered some words of wisdom to aspiring entrepreneurs.
“My advice to anyone out there looking into business is to first cut back on your spending,” she said. “Get a cheaper apartment and less expensive car…put money to the side until you’ve stacked up enough to put toward your dream. If you’re not willing to invest in you, why would anyone else?”
