“You never wake up thinking that…today’s the day that something like this would happen. Being involved in something that tragic and I couldn’t believe it and I don’t like to think about it because I don’t think that is something I could ever get over or truly understand, but that was one of the worst times of my life,” Brandy said about the 2006 incident that fatally injured 38-year-old Awatef Aboudihaj.
Brandy said the tragedy brought her closer to God. “I realized that God is real because I had no one else to depend on. So, I did a lot of speaking to God, a lot of praying and a lot of journaling,” said Brandy who also spoke about her spiritual connection to Whitney Houston.
“Whitney and I were very close,” said Brandy. “I couldn’t accept the fact that she was no longer here.”
Oprah also Brandy about her brother’s relationship with Whitney. Despite a significant age difference, the two were reportedly involved in a romantic relationship.
“My brother was very, very distraught, very disconnected. That was a very hard time in his life,” she said. “She’s definitely one of my angels.”
Though Oprah has a way of pulling the truth out of her guests, Brandy admitted that she lied to Oprah in the past. The former MTV reality star told The Butler star that she was married. In actuality, Brandy has never wed.
“At the time, being pregnant, out of wedlock, was not a trend. It was not something that people praised. It was a sin and I felt like I could not be honest about that. I felt the pressure of, again, having to be perfect. I was scared. I thought that everything that I had worked hard for, that I worked hard to build…was threatened. I felt like having a child out of wedlock would ruin my career,” said Brandy who took the opportunity to apologize. “I’m really sorry for that. You just don’t lie to Oprah.”
