It’s been eight years since NeNe Leakes was introduced to TV viewers via “Real Housewives of Atlanta,” and though she’s grown, the only remaining original cast member said she’s still a work in progress.
“I am older and wiser. I know so much more now that I didn’t know when I came into this world. I feel I have gotten better. I feel my life has changed for the better,” NeNe told Pose magazine.
She’s known as an outspoken, tell-it-is personality on the show and as a result, NeNe’s bumped heads with former co-stars Sheree Whitfield and Kim Zolciak, with whom she mended her relationship. More recently, she’s fallen out with former friend Cynthia Bailey, while putting the brakes on her relationship with Kenya Moore before it really ever got started.
NeNe is often unapologetic for her comments and the way she delivers them, but she has grown enough to acknowledge that her candor sometimes hurts.
“I do think that being real can come off as being harsh,” she admitted. “I have to always think before I say things because I am a straight shooter. I don’t think it is being mean. I think it’s the delivery that makes it mean. Sometimes I just shoot and move on. I don’t really know any other way to do it, but I am learning that sometimes everything doesn’t need to be said.”
While she may work on how she says what she says, NeNe has no intention of offering fans anything but her real authentic self. She can’t so as much about some of her co-stars.
“A lot of these girls come on the show and create a show that is in their head. I come on the show and I play NeNe because it’s a reality show. These other girls come on as characters,” she said. “If you ask me to be real, I am going to be real and you may not like it. Be sure you want to ask me because I am going to tell you.”
